PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:

Lại Diệu Hà • Nguyễn Xuân Hoàng • Phạm Trần Việt Nam • Nguyễn Đoan Ninh • Trần Nhật Thăng • Đặng Quang Tiến • Trịnh Minh Tiến • Nguyễn Đình Hoàng Việt

CURATED BY:

Trần Lương

This art collection is a gathering of lonesome star pieces, that are foreseen not to be able to carry any galaxy missions.

Each artist’s practice floats above their territory.

Linked only by a time zone, a stream, and a scorching atmosphere.

Yet it remains difficult to see any trace of similarity, both in the artists’ internal psyche as well as their visual signals.

Lift face up and ask: Will they be able to converge into a constellation that creates a light trail of smoke with a sharp scent?

Painting is a claustrophobic territoire, layered with histories.

Despite giving up their flesh and bone, the painters remain deeply skeptical at heart.

Only their eyes and hands are utilized to paint, leaving their perked-up ears redundant, prone to gossips,

while their mouth murmurs – twitches – whimpers.

No wonder why Mr. Vincent Van Gogh slashed off his ear.

And I suddenly realize: There is a reason why the question above popped into my head

Similarity across artists – if exists – might not be seen even with our eyes wide stretched.

It seems likely that they also paint with ears/ which is auditory involvement / with sounds/ with rhythm/melody.

Further, there is skin contact/ pungent smell of greasy matter and stagnant puddles.

Add in the sound of mumbles and gladness

And even moans and bursts of tears from these lonesome star pieces.

Yet another painting exhibition, but this time – here – is a calculated move filled with ulterior motives, sparkles of hope, and palpitating anxieties.

ABOUT THE WORKS

It just dawned on me that the world I am witnessing, with all aspects of its existence, was just a facade of other beings. And It was evident that those other beings were pulling me closer to the nature of my inner problems. The contradictions in inner emotions and the levels of awareness in different life situations of contemporary people manifest themselves in descriptive states, collaborative but also separated or isolated. With “broad acculturation” artistic style, I am able to flexibly respond to various expressions of chroma, spaces and ideas. At the same time, develop more extensively with skills that I have learned and practiced industriously.

ABOUT THE WORKS

Oration For Ten Types Of Sentient Beings #7

2013

Oil on canvas

252 x 170 cm

This work represents a bloodthirsty tyrant surrounded by demons and evil spirits, which originate from crimes committed himself.

It shows the artist’s subjective view of an interactive feeling towards wicked forces, demons of greed, and the mysterious things that direct malice.

Oration For Ten Types Of Sentient Beings #12

2011

Oil on canvas

276 x 171 cm

This work illustrates a moving character in a room enveloped by grids. He has a very mysterious nuance with a calculated strategy in mind. Maybe things never stop and can’t be controlled.

The buffalo as a symbol of industriousness is well-known in Vietnamese culture. I took it out of this defaulted and one-sided way perspective, and saw it as a breed born to be a slave, resigned but aggressive.

Wherever ferocious and stupid herds of buffaloes overflow, only ruins are left.

ABOUT THE WORKS

Cleaning the body and mind is not easy and almost always fails! Too much impaled by life and rationales, how to be free?

Well, just let it flow and then suddenly catch it. Saying a thing is like drawing, only when it is clear, the light and simple will slip out, realizing that it is the soul of the painting.

ABOUT THE WORKS

The endless rice fields and  flocks of ducks are always in my memory, which urges me to explore this topic with an open mind and deep feelings. Ducks running in the field has been a typical image of the Southwest countryside yet it cannot be denied that this image has been seen less and less. Probably, the rustic beauty will soon enough remain only in the stories of every Southerner.

ABOUT THE WORKS

The gills are removed as they are inedible. This is human experience.

The painting has no human silhouette but only reflects human intervention in nature. Observation helps me imagine, sometimes detecting humorous elements.

And Speak by Painting.
